the top down by mitt romney. >> now, one of the things about barack obama that you know from having worked so closely with him is that sometimes he can be a little professorial, not to put down professors, but in a debate you have to think about the clock and think about the punchy line. is it a challenge for his current team to get him to speak in sound bites? >> well look, i used to joke with him it takes him 30 seconds to clear his throat sometimes. and look, i think -- look there's no doubt that, you know, you've got a very small window of time and brevity is certainly important and as i said earlier, andrea, the president hasn't done these formats in four years. mitt romney has done these pretty recently as part of 20 republican debates, but look, i have no doubt that the president will be well prepared and look, i don't actually think this debate is going to be decided by some snappy zinger or snappy sound bite. i think the american people, particularly the undecided voters that you, chris and mark were talking about, are really looking for these candidates to discuss what they want

this president down a notch. so in all likelihood my suspicion is you'll see president obama playing defense first, and mitt romney sort of going after him and trying to take a few chunks outof the armor. >> a breaking news matter out of pennsylvania you've been covering this, this judge that ruled the state can't enforce the new vote are i.d. law in the upcoming election. who does it impact, what does it mean? >> we're talking about probably 90,000 some say maybe 100,000, even more according to some accounts of people who don't have the type of i.d. required under this new law in the state of pennsylvania, the judge after an appeals court ruled had to essentially put in an injunction that injunction says we're not going to enforce this vote are i.d. law through november. nonetheless, he also left it open for people at the polls to ask for i.d. of people who come to vote. it's just that the law is not going to be enforced. there's a question rightow that we're still trying network out as to whether they will have to fill out provisional ballots or just vote regularly even if they don't have

challenger by eight points. as mitt romney's, shall we say, second place standing starts to look like more and more of a permanent residence as it seems like a long shot for winning the presidency, the down ticket effect of that is starting to become a bigger part of the conversation. you saw a manifestation of that last week on this show when nancy pelosi came on this show and said, essentially, democrats can win back the house. nancy pelosi said not only is she confident that democrats can get the 25 seats they need to take back control of the house, which is a huge number, she says she, quote, liked to have 35 seats, which would be a lot. and while it is news worthy that the democrats think they can take back the house, it should be said that a number of other observers looking at the same prospect are calling the idea that the democrats could take back the house pretty much impossible. politico publishing a piece on it. one of the consequences of republicans winning so many seats in the state legislatures in the big election of 2010 is that because that was a census year, that was also

to pull that down a little bit. i do believe that mitt romney has not demonstrated that he's agile. he's not kind of light on his feet. so the idea that if you had a tough spot in a debate, whether the moderator pushed or obama pushed and could romney not talking from zingers that he's rehearsed, not talking from talking points, be agile enough to say i can answer these questions because these are my convictions. i think romney's biggest problem is a lack of conviction. he kind of operates and looks as if he's wearing someone else's skin and he's talking using someone else's beliefs. >> ross, what do you make of that? i think barack obama definitely the last time he did this four years ago, he showed flashes of a temper. which if i was in the romney camp, i would be just keep goading him. i'm sure that's what they are trying to calm down in the obama camp, don't lose your temper. romney is pretty cool. i watched him under fire in the republican nominee debates. he was a pretty cool customer. obama can get rattled. >> he had a couple bad moments. the famous however many thousands of dol

of this down. >> well, i guess that's why governor romney has not been more specific and that's because he has no idea how he would actually do this in the first place. if there were a way to do this, you can be sure yhe'd be out there saying it. all along romney has been getting pummeled for not having the specifics. yes, he can have all the zingers he wants. he can say whatever has been wrong, there's a good substantive case to be made against president obama, but he's never presented anything in the way of a detailed alternative that people can get their arms around. even at a paul ryan event this morning, a woman, a supporter got up in the crowd and said where are the details, what are you guys actually going to do? forget about his opponents' demanding it, his supporters are demanding it, saying give us something to vote for. >> ron, being perfectly hoppest, and you have already disclosed you helped prepare governor romney in 2008, are you not disappointed that he hasn't been more specific and more detailed, honestly? >> no, honestly i'm not. >> you're not? >> i'm not dispointed. it's abo
